Oxford University – The Next Generation

Ten aspirational Blue Tie pupils were recently invited to attend a taster day at Oxford University. The day was held at Keble College, one of the many colleges that make up the world famous University.

Upon arrival pupils were provided with some background knowledge about pathways at Post 16 which could lead to them attending Oxford. This was accompanied by some generic information about selecting the appropriate courses for each individual.

Next the students were given a tour of neighbouring Brasenose College which is located in Oxford City Centre. The tour was conducted by current under-graduates who were more than happy to answer any questions about University life. This provided our Icknield pupils with a real flavour about the realities of student life.

The final section of the day involved 3 current Oxford University students providing a 30 minute seminar based upon their field of study. This included; The Big Bang Theory, French as Modern Foreign Language and an in depth look at Geology. Despite some extremely challenging and thought provoking content, I know that our pupils were gripped by the level of detail involved in studying at Oxford.

The day proved to be a real success as it allowed pupils from Luton to access a fantastic University in a beautiful City. Hopefully this will inspire some of our pupils to aim high as they look towards the future.
